Chiang Rai

The city of Chiang Rai (and province of the same name) is located in the northernmost region of Thailand in a beautiful, mountainous landscape. The region is known to us among other things by the living there mountain peoples (inter alia, "Langhals" women, Karen and Hmong tribes) and the adjacent Golden Triangle, the border region to Laos and Myanmar.

The landscape is characterized by lush green rice fields and cloudy, mystical-looking mountain ranges.

The city of Chiang Rai is picturesquely situated on the river Kok and offers its visitors numerous, partly centuries-old sights. In and around the city area there are numerous temples. The most famous temple is undoubtedly the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun).

If you like extended trekking tours in picturesque landscapes mixed with culture and traditions, Chiang Rai will love it!

For us, the visit of the city with its temples, colorful markets and the trip to the Golden Triangle was an absolute travel highlight!

hotel recommendations

We stayed just outside the city center at Boonraksa Homestay and felt very comfortable there. The family-run resort offers large, clean rooms, which are fully equipped. The homestay also offers a small fitness room with treadmills & Co. For breakfast there was coffee and tea and small snacks and fruit. The room was cheap for about 500-600 THB during high season. The hotel is perfect if you are traveling by car as it is about 15 km from the city center.

Arrival from Germany:
Direct (non-stop) flights to Bangkok from Germany are available from Lufthansa and Thai Airways.
Furthermore, the Emirates airlines (Etihad, Qatar and Emirates) offer direct connections, but with a stopover in their respective capitals: Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Dubai, Doha.
Air China and China Eastern usually offer very cheap flights via Beijing or Shanghai to Chiang Rai. In part, the stop in China is over 10 hours. But in China / Beijing there is the possibility to stay up to 72 hours visa free.
